INIVA - International Artists In LONDON
I visited INIVA with my friend who studies Fine Arts at Goldsmiths
college. INIVA – Institute of International Visual Arts – introduces and promotes international artists and bring their works to London,
which I thought is very relevant to the idea of cultural diversity (as part of sustainability).
We looked around a special exhibition of PARK Chan-Kyong and Lina Selandar. It is their first UK solo presentations of selected work, curated by Binna Choi and Lisa Rosendahl. (Lisa Rosendahl is a popular curator,
as she has worked on big artists’ works, according to my friend.)
골드스미스에서 순수미술을 전공하는 친구와 함께 런던 Old Street 쪽에 위치한 이니바(INIVA) 갤러리를 함께 방문했다. 미술하는 친구답게 영국에서 처음
만난 곳이 갤러리. 이니바는 해외작가들의 작품위주로 전시하는 갤러리라고
한다. 우리가 둘러본 전시는 박찬욱 감독의 동생인 박찬경씨의 특별전시였는데
오는 3월 21까지 열린다고 하니 관심이 있다면 Old Street 동네 구경도 할겸
들려보시는 걸 추천!
박찬경씨 작품과 큐레이트된 리나 셀렌더(Lina Selandar)의 작품은 유명한
큐레이터 리사 로센달(Lisa Rosendahl)이 함께 했다고 한다. 영국에서 이렇게 해외작가들의 작품을 들여오는 것이 문화적 다양성에 잘 기여하는 것 같아 글로 담아보고 싶었다.
EXHIBITION
Historically, Korea has a lot of customs related to shamanism. Park Chan-Kyong’s exhibition (Installation Art) called Pa-Gyong (Last Sutra Recitation) shows these shamanistic rituals — and somehow connect it with political matters in Korea. To be honest, I do not have a great idea about how to interpret this exhibition. This exhibition is more like a collage of his working process and sources of inspirations. It has a lot of videos and audio
installations (of authentic Shamanistic ritual process in Korea), which I could not capture with cameras, so I would recommend you all to visit this interesting exhibition.
파경이라는 제목에서부터 알 수 있듯이 역사적으로 미신, 샤머니즘, 무당과 함께해온 한국의 이미지가 박찬경씨의 전시의 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다. 이런 한국의 관습을 정치적문제와 연관시켰다고 설명이 나와있는데 사실 깊게 분석할 자신은 없다.. 실제로 무당하는 장면을 담은 영상과소리를 이용한 전시들이 있기 때문에 꼭 방문해보길 추천한다.
My friend (**again, he’s a Fine Arts student, so I basically listen to him when it comes to Art) told me that he enjoys looking at the works in a grand and holistic view, finding the connections between the works, and then he looks into individual ones. It actually works very well and makes your visit to galleries more interesting — sometimes I have no idea how I should understand some art pieces, but his advice was very helpful for my later visits to other galleries like Saatchi or Museum of Childhood.
여태까지 봤던 전시 중에서 가장 흥미로웠던 전시라 해도 과언이 아니라 생각한다. 굉장히 단순하고, 아날로그적이고, 순수한 느낌의 전시였다. 그림 하나하나의 설명을 연필로 쓴 것이 굉장히 인상적이었다. 먼저 멀리서 작품들을 보면서 연계성을 찾고 작품 하나하나를 관찰한다는 친구의 말을 듣고 최대한 그렇게 미술 전시들을 감상하려고 노력중이다. 사실 미술 전시들을 많이 다녀도 도대체 어떻게 이해해야 하는 건지 감이 오지 안을 때가 굉장히 많은데 이 친구의 조언대로 해보니 이후에 미술관/박물관들을 방문했을 때도 나름대로 재미있게
전시들을 즐겼다. 미술 전공자의 말이니 일단 듣고보는 게 상책.
Regarding the way of presentation, this was the most interesting exhibition I have ever been to. Very simple, natural, and analogue. Instead of printing the descriptions, he wrote every single words on the wall with a pencil.
여태까지 봤던 전시 중에서 가장 흥미로웠던 전시라 해도 과언이 아니라 생각한다. 굉장히 단순하고, 아날로그적이고, 순수한 느낌의 전시였다. 그림 하나하나의 설명을 연필로 쓴 것이 굉장히 인상적이었다.
I did not really take that much photos in Lina Selander’s exhibition since it was mostly composed of films. They were quite hard to understand for me, but it seemed like a series of different images (including those from Chernobyl and Hiroshima) converge into her main idea – the desires and failures of modernity. It was mostly about finding the connections between the images.
리나 셀렌더의 전시는 대부분 영상이었기에 따로 촬영을 많이 하지는 않았다. 영상이 조금 난해하긴 했지만 체르노빌, 히로시마 등 이미지들 간의 연결고리를 찾아서 그녀의 메세지를 해석하는 듯한 전시였다. 아래의 설명에 나와있는 이 전시의 주제를 해석하자면 ‘현대화에 대한 갈망과 실패’ 정도가 될 것 같다.

Why am I including Cultural Diversity into Sustainability? Just wanted to write this down as I talked with my friend about my blog after this visit.
I think sustainability is not just about green but having “harmonious” community as well. As there are more and more international residents in many cities (especially in metropolitan cities), people need to understand each other’s culture and way of thinking. If such learning process is undermined, I think it becomes hard to sustain the community life. Well, yes, this is a looong term idea of sustainability, but I think it is as much as important as green policies.
친구와 이 블로그에 대해서 이야기하던 중 문화적 다양성이 어떤 식으로 지속가능성에 기여하는지에 대하여 이야기하게 되었다.
단순히 친환경적인 것들만 지속가능성이라기엔 이제 지속가능성은 그 범위를 넘어서고 있다. 로컬 비즈니스들의 활성화를 통한 지역경제 살리기도 그 커뮤니티를 지속하는 데에 중요하기에 지속가능성에 기여한다고 볼 수 있는 것처럼, 다양한 인종과 문화를 가진 사람들이 한 도시(특히 메트로폴리탄 도시들)에 모이는 것이 낯설지 않은 이 시대에 서로의 배경을 알아가는 것만큼 좋은 의사소통은 없다고 생각한다. 그러한 배움의 과정이간과되어서 서로를 이해하지 못하고 존중하지 못하는 공동체가 된다면 결코 그 안에서의 생활은 지속될 수 없다는 생각이 들었기에 문화적 다양성이 장기적 관점에서 지속가능성에 꼭 필요하다고 느꼈다.
